If you own a Wii U, chances are you have picked up a copy of Hyrule Warriors as it’s one of the better games for Nintendo’s system. It’s a hack-and-slash action game that fills the screen with plenty of enemies for you to tackle. So when Nintendo decided to port the game to the 3DS we all expected some compromises would have to be made, and it turns out if you intend to play it on older 3DS hardware, you’ll have to make an extra compromise.
The 3DS port is called Hyrule Warriors Legends and was apparently greenlit for development due to demand from players who wanted a handheld version. The finished game will include all DLC released for the Wii U version as well as extra playable characters, an additional story mode, and Amiibo support. The biggest problem faced during development was getting the older, less powerful 3DS hardware to handle large groups of enemies.
The desired level of on-screen hoards was achieved on the New 3DS and New 3DS XL thanks to the faster processor inside, but the same was not possible on older 3DS models. However, Yosuke Hayashi, producer on the game, has confirmed they overcame the older hardware limitations with one simple change: they disabled stereoscopic 3D. By doing so enough performance was made available to match the enemy counts on the newer 3DS hardware.
So, if you plan to play Hyrule Warriors Legends on older 3DS hardware then you won’t have the option of turning 3D on, which is better than Xenoblade Chronicles requiring the New 3DS at least. For most gamers this will be no great loss as the 3D soon makes your eyes tired and most turn it off. The game will also work on the 2DS which doesn’t have the option of 3D anyway.
